Role of Training and Education for Dialysis Staff and Their Patients:

Training and education is recommended for both staff members and patients or their family members. Training should be appropriate to the cognitive level of the staff member, patient, family member and rationales should be provided for appropriate infection control behaviour and techniques to increase compliance.


The following recommendations are to be followed:

Training and education for Employees:

  • Training and education for Employees at risk for occupational exposure to blood should be provided at least yearly, given to new employees before they begin working in the dialysis unit, and documented.

  • Proper Hand Hygiene Techniques





  • Proper Use of Personal Protective Equipment



      • Modes of transmission for blood borne viruses, pathogenic bacteria, and other microorganism.




      • Infection Control Practices recommended for Dialysis Units and they differ from standard precautions recommended for other healthcare settings.

      • Proper handling and delivery of patient’s medications.

      • Rational for segregating HBsAg Positive  patients with:
                Separate Room,
                Separate Machine
                Separate Instruments
                Supplies
                Medication
                Staff member

      • Proper infection control techniques for initiation, care and maintenance of access site of patient

      • Housekeeping to minimize transmission of microorganism, including proper methods to clean and disinfect equipment and environmental surfaces


      • Central Record Keeping to monitor and prevent complications including routine serologic testing results for HBV and HCV, Hepatitis B vaccine status, episodes of bacteraemia and loss of access caused by infection, other adverse events.
      • Records of surveillance reports for water and dialysate quality should also be focused.     




      Training and education for Patients or Family Member:


      At the minimum, they should get information and knowledge on the following topics:

      • Personal Hygiene
      • Hand washing Techniques

      • Patient Diet



      • Patient Responsibility for proper routine care  
      • Patient Responsibility for proper care of the access and recognition of signs of infection, which should be reviewed every time the patient has a change in access type and recommended vaccination.
